BioBrew is a low-cost, open-source system that helps small coffee farms treat wastewater sustainably. It uses vermifiltration, a natural process where earthworms and microbes turn coffee pulp and acidic water into compost and liquid fertiliser. Co-developed with farmers in the Cauca region of Colombia, BioBrew addresses the issue of pollution from untreated coffee waste, which harms rivers and degrades soil. The system is modular, solar-powered, and made from locally available, affordable materials like PVC pipes and recycled coffee fermentation tanks. It’s easy to build, maintain, and scale according to farm size. Field testing showed that BioBrew reduces odour and improves water quality. By turning waste into a valuable resource, BioBrew supports sustainable farming and helps small coffee producers improve their land, income, and surrounding ecosystems.
