Ruang2Gather: Community-Driven Learning Space Redesign in Malaysia

Ruang2Gather advocates for collaborative efforts to transform underutilised school ruangs (Malay for “spaces”) into inclusive, innovative learning environments. Grounded in justice, empathy, and the belief that well-designed spaces should be accessible to all; this community-driven, volunteer-led initiative pilots a replicable co-design framework with teachers, students, and surrounding communities.

The initiative addresses the gap between national aspirations for 21st-century learning in Malaysia and the reality of constrained infrastructure funding, especially in underserved areas. Ruang2Gather aims to demonstrate how small-scale, high-empathy redesigns can spark meaningful change despite, or because of, limited resources.

Through its four-phase participatory process, the initiative empowers communities within and around schools as co-designers of their learning environments. At its core, Ruang2Gather makes people feel they had a hand not just in painting walls, but in shaping futures, together.
