Caring Communities – A Care Ecosystem in the North of Singapore
Caring Communities, launched in the North of Singapore in 2011, mobilise the power of community solutions to create connected neighbourhoods and strengthen residents’ natural capabilities to actively produce health, wellbeing and care, individually and collectively. Residents meet regularly at 39 community nodes to enjoy group activities. Health is explored opportunistically and stealthily in these activities, guided by salutogenic, place-based and asset-based approaches, and drawing on local culture and wisdom for adoption. By linking health with its wider determinants, Caring Communities reimagine how wellbeing can be experienced, and nurture a more sustainable, people-powered health ecosystem over time. Over 10,000 active residents demonstrate that they can take ownership of health with dignity and purpose, while professional healthcare expertise serves as a supportive safety net when necessary. These health-creating communities significantly improve quality of life and reduce healthcare utilisation and costs, showing the transformative power of community-led health.
