Program: Non-Bionormative Prosthesis Design

Exploring Non-Bionormative Prosthesis Design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), Budapest reimagines design education through humanity-centered practice and lived, situative experience. Led by Renata Dezso in collaboration with artist Luca Szabados, the program integrates critical disability studies with Research through Design. With Luca as co-educator, students engage in co-Ability frameworks that move beyond human-centered processes toward situated co-creation. Prosthetic prototypes become discursive tools, continually refined through practice. This approach engages the complex ecosystem of people, living beings, and the physical environment. Students carry these experiences forward into their own projects, fostering solutions that address root issues rather than surface problems, and shaping futures grounded in humanity and shared responsibility.

Students

The HCD+ program has offered a series of evolving courses since 2019, beginning with Design for Care and later expanding into more interdisciplinary and co-Ability–focused approaches. Enrollment has included 36 students across the early Design for Care courses (7 + 17 + 12) and 22 students in the Non-Bionormative Prosthesis Design course (14 + 8), for a total of 58 students. All participants have successfully graduated, with the exception of those currently completing the most recent Non-Bionormative Prosthesis Design course.
