Professor

Jofras  is a visual artist who combines design with cultural and social studies. He is a university professor at CETYS Universidad, in the College of Social Science and Humanities, where he served as the Center of Excellence in Human and Social Development coordinator. His instructional focus spans undergraduate and graduate courses, delving into the intersection of practice and research. He brings experience from social issues to his academic endeavors, having participated in impactful projects with USAID and CIPE. Moreover, he has led research groups dedicated to border cities and creative industries through the INNSIGNIA initiative.

Jofras actively engages with youth groups, communities, and professionals to tackle social and environmental challenges using design, documentary film, and photography. Following this line of work, he studies the organization of art collectives and citizen movements that address public safety and quality of life at the US-Mexican border.

In 2019, he received the Matías Romero Visiting Scholars Program from The University of Texas at Austin and LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections. In 2020, he participated in the HOME 2024  San Diego-Tijuana World Design Capital  bid and became a Design-to-Action Leader, representing Tijuana's Youth and Education within the WDC Legacy Program.

Jorge (Jofras) Sánchez holds a Ph.D.in Social Sciences with a specialization in Regional Studies and a Master's degree in Cultural Studies from the Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He is a full-time faculty at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at CETYS Universidad. He is a National System of Researchers (CONAHCYT) member , level 1. His research interests include regional studies, urban areas, border spaces, art, and the creative economy. 

He began his border studies scholarship when he enrolled in the Border Issues seminar (BIS) during his bachelor studies in design, and he became the on-site coordinator in his senior year. As a lecturer, he coordinated the BIS integrating universities from the Jesuit University System in Mexico and the United States. This interest persisted throughout his career, leading him to join the Fronteridades and COMEXUS Project in 2021, led by Dr. Carmen King at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His involvement included designing and creating a virtual classroom seminar for bachelor students residing along the U.S.-Mexico Border.

Currently, he participates in a research group studying Women´s Economic Empowerment & Climate Action (WEECA).
