Book House
The Book House project has been created by Condition_Lab, a Social Enterprise “amphibian” research/practice, working within the School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Book House is a type of library building where children learn by playing. It developed as an idea to help urban communities in Hong Kong as a temporary structure within residual urban spaces and has matured into a building typology for rural villages in China and Africa.
To date, we have designed, funded, and built 5 versions in China, where the structures act as third places, not a school or a home, where children can learn by playing. We are now about to open two new versions in Kenya.
The judges felt that the designs were done by professionals. They did use local materials in a sustainable fashion and followed indigenous techniques and styles. However, judges fel this was not "Early Career." Moreover, the evidence that this was effective was from verbal praise. Hence, the Special recognition section.
